FAQs

Mass spectrometry is a powerful, precise, and sensitive analytical technique that is used to identify and quantify known and unknown molecules in a wide variety of samples types and sample complexity, as well as elucidate structural and chemical properties of molecules of interest. These molecules can be present in solid, liquid, or gas samples.

Mass spectrometers are the sorting, detecting, and counting component of the analytical technique referred to as mass spectrometry. They are exceedingly sensitive and specific and, together with a sample delivery system, have the capability of answering many kinds of quantitative and qualitative questions about samples.

They work by measuring the mass-to-charge (m/z) ratio of one or more molecules, called ions, present in a sample. Samples are typically introduced via a liquid chromatography system (LC) and are ionized in the ion source. From here, they are moved through the mass spectrometer via electric and magnetic fields to the detection element where they are measured and recorded.

Many types of gas chromatography (GC), LC, and MS systems exist today enabling an ever-increasing number of applications in science and technology. The needs of users vary, as do the chemical form and amount of sample available for analysis, thus vendors have developed a wide variety of designs. Fundamentally, however, there are a several major components:

  • Ionization source: This element is responsible for creating the ionization of samples and produces a beam of charged particles (either negative or positively charged).
  • Mass Analyzer: Once ionized, the ions are separated according to their mass-to-charge (m/z) ratio by the mass analyzer.
  • Detector: The separated and sorted ions are then measured and sent to a data system for analysis. The m/z ratios are stored along with the relative abundance. A mass spectrum is plotted against their intensities where each peak in a mass spectrum represents a unique m/z in the sample, and the height of each peak connotes its abundance.

Our mass spectrometers are designed to help you break new ground by pushing the limits of speed and sensitivity in quantitative and qualitative analyses. They deliver the speed and performance that ensures the results are the best the can be.
