LED illumination contributes to reproducible results – whether you work with brightfield (BF), High Dynamic Darkfield (HDF), Differential Interference Contrast (DIC), Fluorescence (FL), or Polarization (POL).

  • View your sample in constant color temperature at any microscope setting: No need to reset the camera every time the brightness is altered or to adjust white balance.
  • Detect more imperfections and defects on your sample choosing one or several of the contrast methods available.
  • Be energy-efficient and cost-effective: LED illumination saves energy – and with a lifetime of up to 72.000 hours, bulb changes causing microscope downtime are a thing of the past.

What is the advantage of the Leica Microscope Assistant?
The Leica Microscope Assistant (the Leica Application Suite (LAS) Store and Recall module) allows you to benefit from the full digital integration of microscope, illumination, and microscope camera. At any time, the specific settings of every acquired image can be recalled and displayed. The stored status of microscope and camera is automatically preserved so you can recall it even years later.
For which applications would I use halogen rather than LED illumination?
Some applications in art restoration, in which color fidelity is crucial, and the inspection of questioned documents, are better conducted with Halogen illumination. There are also applications requiring infrared light or the measurement of color spectra where Halogen or xenon lamps would be the preferred illumination.
What is the advantage of LED illumination?
LED illumination provides a constant color temperature at all intensity levels, so that you can view the sample in the same color temperature at any microscope setting. This is particularly important for documentation since the camera settings and white balance can remain constant as well. Additionally, LEDs save energy, radiate little heat, and last up to 25,000 hours.
Which contrast modes are available for the Leica DM4 M and the Leica DM6 M?
Samples can be inspected in Brightfield (BF), High-definition Darkfield (HDF), Differential Interference Contrast (DIC), Polarization Contrast (POL), and Fluorescence (FLUO).
How does the Contrast Manager help me work faster?
The Contrast Manager changes between the various contrast modes at the press of a button and automatically sets the selected contrast. Light intensity, aperture and field diaphragm are automatically adjusted.
How does the Illumination Manager help me work faster?
The Illumination Manager sets optimum values for aperture and light intensity in the motorized version of both systems, because the microscope detects the selected objective and contrast mode. You can save time with this function and significantly improve inspection quality, especially if less experienced operators work with the microscope.
Which types of samples are typically not imaged with the Leica DM4 M and Leica DM6 M?
You wouldn’t use them for geological samples such as minerals. Instead, you would use the Leica DM4 P, a high-precision polarization microscope that is ideally suited for conoscopy and orthoscopy.
For which samples would I typically use the Leica DM4 M and Leica DM6 M?
Both microscopes are ideal tools for materials science and materials analysis. This includes quality control of steel samples for inclusion rating, metal cuts for grain sizing, and microelectronics inspection. Depending on the type of sample, different optical equipment, stage holders or stages are used – both instruments can be fully tailored for your needs.
What is the difference between the Leica DM4 M and Leica DM6 M?
The difference is in the level of automation. The technical specifications give you a good overview of the automated features.
What are the advantages of the Leica DM6 M?
The Leica DM6 M can do everything the Leica DM4 M can, with the additional benefit of full automation. The Leica DM6 M simplifies your work. You can configure it with a motorized Z-drive, motorized nosepiece turret, and motorized stage. You can easily combine all common incident light methods, and a transmitted light axis is also available. A single push on the touch screen sets the illumination level and aperture diaphragm, and automatically selects the objective and contrast method. This way, you can reproduce microscope observation settings and turn to more important tasks at hand. The perfect match of high-quality optics and innovative software such as the Leica Microscope Assistant and the Illumination and Contrast Manager, makes the Leica DM6 M an intuitive and fast imaging system for routine work.
What are the advantages of the Leica DM4 M?
The system provides accuracy and reproducibility. Your images are always calibrated due to the coded functions and the Leica optical system. One click of a button will reproduce exactly the same imaging conditions as used for a previous inspection. Crucial factor in this are separate pinhole disks for the aperture and field diaphragm. The pinhole disks have holes in different sizes and are set from one size to the next. This way, the diaphragm position is 100 percent reproducible, since the position can be stored. Additionally, the integrated Illumination Manager and Contrast Manager supports you with automated functions.
